Success Story - Anna Vilshina and Steve Chanoch, Software Tester and a Customer Service Representative, Music Lab

anna vilshina and steve chanoch searched for work and found jobs at music lab via the jobnet site.

steve, 37, is an israeli who grew up in the us and made aliya two years ago. six months ago he began working in the company’s service department.
anna, 27, who made aliya from the ukraine a decade ago, has been working at the company as a software tester for the past six months.

“i moved back to israel two years ago,” steve recalls.
“at first i went to study at an ulpan while working as manager of a barber shop. i spent the whole time evaluating and studying the local job market, but i didn’t start looking for work actively. it was a scouting process. in new york i held a post that doesn’t exist in israel: project manager business analyzer. the job structure there is totally different and i had to adapt myself to the local market.”

anna:
“before i came to music lab i spent two years working in the customer service department at bezeq while studying software and management. i wanted to find work in the field when i finished the program.”

describing the job-search process steve says,
“i went about the process of looking for work and becoming familiar with the local market through the jobnet site. i was already familiar with jobnet while i was still living in the us. i would comb the site to study the market and get to know the local companies.

“i started searching the site by looking for the word ‘english.’ i did a keyword search and got hundreds of results. the next step was to define my needs. i looked for high-tech companies and took a look at the websites of the companies i was unfamiliar with. during the screening process i started by crossing the large companies off my list. the active search process took me two months. i sent resumes to about 50 companies and i went to five job interviews before arriving at music lab.”

anna:
“i spent a long time looking for work – about five months. i sent out a lot of resumes. i searched for work on jobnet, among other places, and in the end i found my job through jobnet. after going to several interviews and doing a lot of homework, i got hired here.”

music lab invented much of the p2p technology used to operate today’s p2p networks and is considered the world’s most veteran network.
music lab builds the world’s only network authorized by the music industry and plans to provide “legal contents” including songs, movies and television programs for millions of users.

“this is my first time working as a software tester,” says anna. “it’s interesting work that carries a lot of responsibility. we are the final people to approve the product.”

steve:
“i work in the customer support department. most of music lab’s customers are from the us and canada and we provide them service by phone and e-mail. the work isn’t easy. we take a lot of calls that are distributed among a small number of workers and each of us sends out a large number of e-mail messages every day. i work according to east coast time, monday through friday from 3:00 pm to midnight. my vacation days are also according to the us holidays."

“when i first came to music lab i was really excited by what i saw. the company i had worked at in new york was a medium-size company by us standards -1,000 employees. working at a company with 30-40 people is a big change for me. i felt really at ease from the moment i came here.
“it’s a very pleasant company. there’s no hierarchy separating management from the workers. everybody works together and there’s no one on your back. the demands are reasonable and the workers are valued.”

anna:
“i’m very happy here. i felt good from my first day on the job. that’s really important because i spend most of my day at work.”

two months after she started working at the company anna moved to the neveh sevionim neighborhood, a ten-minute walk from the office.

“after two months i realized i want to stay here and i moved to a location close to the office. i like it here, and not just because of the work i do. personally i prefer working in a small company, which is homier and more sociable. i have a yardstick for comparison because i came from a huge company. here everybody knows one another, not just by name but the person behind the name, too.”
